Technical Description
When a three-phase voltage system is applied to an induction motor, the phase currents are phase-shifted from the phase voltages in the lagging direction by the power factor angle φ, typically around 30° for 2-hp and 5-hp motor classes.
The speed of the magnetic rotating field represents the synchronous speed. For an induction motor with P poles, synchronous speed in r/min is calculated accordingly. The asynchronous rotor speed depends on frequency, number of poles, and load torque, where higher torque results in increased slip and reduced asynchronous rotor speed.
Induction motors connected to constant frequency sinusoidal AC power supplies operate at fixed asynchronous speeds, making them suitable for constant-speed applications including pumps with consistent flow, fans, air compressors, conveyor belts, mixers, and drills.
