The National Instruments sbRIO-9636 (Part Number: 782128-01) is an embedded single-board real-time controller built for CompactRIO systems, featuring both digital and analog I/O. It includes 512 megabytes of internal storage, 256 megabytes of dynamic RAM, and a 400 MHz industrial-grade processor. Its digital lines are directly controlled through an integrated field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Beyond standard communication interfaces, the sbRIO-9636 also has an SD port compatible with the SDHC standard.

This CompactRIO single-board controller offers 16 16-bit analog input channels, 4 16-bit analog output channels, and 28 bidirectional digital I/O channels. The NI sbRIO-9636 allows for individual programming of each analog input channel, enabling different channels to operate across varying input ranges. This ability to program input ranges comes from the integrated programmable gain instrumentation amplifier, which amplifies analog input signals according to the user-specified range. As a result, the sbRIO-9636 can function across diverse analog input ranges—such as –10 V to 10 V, –5 V to 5 V, –2 V to 2 V, and –1 V to 1 V—with 16-bit resolution. It has a maximum power consumption of 24.7 W.

The sbRIO-9636 is equipped with two RS-232 serial ports and one RS-485 serial port. Its embedded CAN port, featuring an NXP PCA82C251T transceiver, supports baud rates up to 1 Mbps. The controller also fully supports universal serial bus (USB) connectivity, allowing for additional storage via USB-enabled flash drives or thumb drives.

The sbRIO-9636 operates with NI-RIO driver software (version 4.1 or later) and can be programmed using software packages or application development environments (ADEs) such as LabVIEW 2011 SP1 or later, LabVIEW Real-Time Module 2011 SP1 or later, and LabVIEW FPGA Module 2011 SP1 or later. It weighs 4.66 oz and has a recommended operating temperature range of -40 to 85 °C.

While the sbRIO-9636 is now classified as obsolete by National Instruments, Apex Waves will continue to make it available indefinitely for both purchase and repairs.
