The IC697CPM790 is a single-slot CPU module engineered for GE Fanuc’s Series 90-70 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) platform, tailored explicitly for mission-critical applications including emergency shutdown systems (ESD), fire and gas detection systems, and other high-reliability industrial scenarios. It supports Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) functionality, with standalone C program integration required to enable autotest routines and TMR operation.
Equipped with 1 MB of battery-backed memory, the IC697CPM790 allocates up to 512 KB of storage space for user programs developed in ladder diagram programming language. Driven by an 80486DX2 microprocessor operating at a 64 MHz clock speed, the CPU delivers high-speed processing performance with a Boolean instruction execution time of 0.4 microseconds— a capability well-suited for time-sensitive critical operations. Its I/O handling capacity varies by operational mode:
  • In simplex mode: Supports up to 12,000 mixed discrete I/O points and 8,000 mixed analog I/O points;
  • In TMR mode: Supports 2,048 voted discrete input points, 2,048 voted discrete output points, and 1,024 voted analog input points.
TMR functionality is a core feature of the IC697CPM790, designed to eliminate system downtime by virtue of its redundant architecture. A complete TMR configuration consists of three identical PLC racks (each fitted with one IC697CPM790 CPU), three parallel Genius I/O buses, triple redundant input sensors, and triple redundant output loads. This fully redundant setup ensures continuous operation even in the event of a single component failure.
For communication, the IC697CPM790 is furnished with a 15-pin sub-D connector natively supporting RS485-compatible devices. To establish connections with programming computers, dedicated converters are required, including the IC690ACC900 (RS-422/RS-485 to RS-232 converter) or the IC690ACC901 (RS-232 to RS-422 miniconverter).
Programming of the IC697CPM790 is supported via Windows or MS-DOS-based software. The CPU communicates with on-rack I/O modules and smart option modules through the PLC backplane. Critical to its operation, the IC697CPM790 requires a standalone C program to be integrated into the loaded application software; this program is mandatory for enabling TMR functionality, autotest sequences, and core operating routines.
Additional features of the IC697CPM790 include configurable program and data memory partitions, four status indicator LEDs, password-protected system access, a 3-position operation mode selector switch, and a battery-backed calendar clock for time-stamping and event logging.
