The IC693APU300 High-Speed Counter (HSC) Module is a key component of the Series 90-30 PLC platform. Originally manufactured by GE Fanuc Automation, this product line is now part of Emerson Automation following an acquisition. Engineered for versatility, the module is ideally suited for a wide array of industrial processes, including turbine flow metering, meter proving, velocity measurement, material handling, motion control, and process control applications.
 
In metering scenarios, the HSC module can generate totalized data for supplied or received materials, serving as a reliable basis for billing, payment verification, consumption monitoring, and operational efficiency analysis. For motion control tasks, it pairs seamlessly with encoders, processing high-speed, low-level voltage signals that reflect the position or displacement of loads to enable precise motion regulation. Within material handling systems, it supports rapid product counting, facilitating accurate sorting of manufactured goods and materials. In process control workflows, the module is capable of measuring high-speed process variables, such as signals from magnetic speed pickups.
 
Equipped with 12 positive logic inputs (compatible with 5 VDC or 10–30 VDC signal voltages) and 4 positive logic outputs (delivering 500 mA at 10–30 VDC or 20 mA at 4.75–6 VDC rated voltages), the IC693APU300 boasts a maximum count rate of 200 kHz and accommodates signal switching frequencies of up to 8 kHz. Classified as an option module, it can be installed in any available I/O slot of Series 90-30 baseplates.
 
As a compact, single-slot counter module, the IC693APU300 excels at processing high-speed signal pulses up to 80 kHz independently—eliminating the need for constant communication with the PLC CPU when sensing inputs, triggering outputs, and counting input/output response signals. It supports both up-counting and down-counting functions, as well as differential counting between two variable values. Two green LED indicators on the module’s top panel provide clear visibility of its operating status and configuration parameter conditions.
 
The module offers flexible counter configurations, including 4 identical independent simple counters, 1 complex counter, or 2 identical independent complex counters. Additional features include a time-based count register for each counter, a removable terminal board for simplified field wiring, and built-in module diagnostics for proactive fault detection. Power is sourced directly from the PLC backplane’s 5 VDC bus, and the module is compatible with all Series 90-30 baseplates.
 
Installation & Operational Notes
 
  • Do not install the module in enclosures that require tools for access.
  • The module must not be removed or replaced without first shutting down the PLC system properly.
  • Configuration can be completed using software such as Logicmaster 90-30/20, Hand-Held Programmer, Logic Developer-PLC, or VersaPro.
