The addition of the intelligent field is a deliberate extension of traditional MES definitions. A careful examination of the Business System reveals numerous applications that need information about both the process and process equipment (or assets). If you only consider process information, you fail to benefit from information about the availability or readiness of the process equipment to perform in an optimal manner.
The MES framework is based upon Microsoft Technologies COM (Component Object Model) and OPC (OLE for Process Control) for real-time information and XML (eXtensible Markup Language) for transactional information. OPC and XML are communication standards that permit the free flow of information across functional areas without an additional software application or multiple custom programmed interfaces.
