The starter and overload heater assembly for an industrial electric motor is often located quite a distance
from the motor itself, inside a room referred to as a motor control center, or MCC:
Since it is impossible for a technician to be in two places at once, it is often necessary to perform diagnostic checks on a malfunctioning electric motor from the MCC where the technician has access to all the control circuitry.
One such diagnostic check is line current, to detect the presence of an open motor winding. If a threephase motor winding fails open, the motor will not run as it should. This is called single-phasing. A good way to check for this condition is to use a clamp-on (inductive) ammeter to check line current on all three lines while the starter is energized. This may be done at any location where there is physical access to the motor power conductors.
CUSTOMER SUPPLIED DATA:
Voltage: (6 thru 48 Volt normally available)
Motor Load: Speed, Torque, and Current.
(An existing motor can be tested by DCM & matched)
Shaft Diameter: Length (Single or Double Extension)
Material: (Carbon Steel Standard - Stainless Steel)
SGMAS Series Wound DC Motors have the armature and field windings connected in a series circuit. These type motors normally drive loads that require precise speed regulation. Starting torque developed in series motors normally ranges between 300% and 375% of full load, but can be as high as 800% of full load torque. These motors can easily be configured in 2 & 3 speed, as well as reversible models.
THREE-PHASE ROTATING FIELDS require three pairs of windings 120 windings 120º apart energized by voltages that also have a 120 apart, energized by voltages that also have a 120-degree phase displacement.
SYNCHRONOUS MOTORS are specifically designed to maintain constant speed with the rotor synchronous to the rotating field constant speed, with the rotor synchronous to the rotating field.
Synchronous motors require modification (such as squirrel-cage windings) to be self-starting.
