SPINAL LOWER MOTOR NEURONS
Lower motor neurons (LMNs; also called alpha motor neurons) are directly responsible for the generation of force by the muscles they innervate. A motor unit is a single LMN and all of the muscle fibers it innervates. The collection of LMNs that innervate a single muscle (triceps) is called
a motor neuron pool.
You should remember from the spinal cord and brain stem module that LMNs that control proximal and distal muscles are found mainly in the cervical and lumbosacral segments of the spinal cord. At these levels, the LMNs are distributed such that neurons controlling axial muscles lie medial to those LMNs controlling distal muscles, and motor neurons controlling flexors lie dorsal to those controlling extensors. In the thoracic cord below T1, the LMNs are associated only with axial musculature.
