DC Motor Technology Overview
LEESON Electric produces permanent-magnet direct current motors, which represent the oldest member of the electric motor family. Recent technological advancements in magnetic materials, solid-state electronic controls, and high-power-density rechargeable batteries have revitalized the versatile DC motor.
DC motors offer extremely high torque capabilities and can be used with relatively simple solid-state control devices to provide programmed acceleration and deceleration across a wide range of selected speeds. Unlike AC motors, DC motor speed is not dependent on the number of poles, providing great versatility for both constant and variable speed applications.
Two-Speed AC Induction Motors
Some AC induction motors are equipped with multiple windings to operate at two distinct speeds (with low speed typically being one-half of high speed). The motor features six terminals where connections are made:
The motor's datasheet specifies the connection configurations. This is a typical example:
The motor runs at half-speed in one connection scheme and full speed in the other due to different winding configurations that alter the magnetic field characteristics and synchronous speed of the motor.
