This expansion is facilitated by two communication interfaces on the module’s front panel: Port 1 serves as an upstream expansion port for connecting to the CPU rack or other BEM711/BEM713 modules, while the second interface acts as a downstream expansion port for linking to subsequent expansion racks or BEM711 modules via a daisy-chain configuration.

The module ensures reliable data transmission with a high-speed parallel bus expansion interface, supporting a transmission rate of 500 Kilobytes per second (Kbytes/sec). The maximum allowable cable length between any two BEM711 or BEM713 modules is 50 feet (15 meters), and compatible I/O cables include the 5-foot IC600WD005A, 10-foot IC600WD010A, 25-foot IC600WD025A, and 50-foot IC600WD050A. Notably, the last expansion rack in the configuration requires a terminating resistor (catalog number IC697ACC702) to signal the network end and identify the final node—this component is often ordered alongside the module.

System fault isolation is achieved through the module’s design: data transmitted via communication cables are low-level signals specific to each expansion rack, allowing individual expansion racks to be isolated for troubleshooting without disrupting the entire system.
