The IC697BEM731 is a dedicated Genius Bus Controller Module and a core component of the GE Fanuc Series 90-70 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) portfolio. Its primary function is to enable seamless connectivity with up to 30 field devices, utilizing a token-passing communication mechanism to facilitate data transmission across all configured devices on the same bus.

The module is equipped with a single communication channel for bus-connected device interfacing, plus one Hand-Held Monitor (HHM) port that supports configuration downloads via MS-DOS or Windows-based programming software configurator tools. Shipped without a predefined bus address, the IC697BEM731 defaults to a baud rate of 153.6 Kbaud and a bus address of 31 upon initial configuration via software. These default parameters can be reconfigured as needed by loading a valid configuration file to the host CPU. Maximum allowable bus communication distances are contingent on baud rate settings:

2,000 ft at the standard 153.6 Kbaud configuration
3,500 ft at the extended 153.6 Kbaud configuration
4,500 ft at 76.8 Kbaud
7,500 ft at 38.4 Kbaud

Critical to stable communication, all devices on the same bus or network must be programmed with identical baud rates; mismatched settings will either prevent communication establishment or result in unstable data transmission.

The network infrastructure requires Belden 9182 cable, paired with GE-specified accessories including 3 units of IC660BLC001 (15-inch) and 1 unit of IC660BLC003 (36-inch) cable assemblies. Bus termination is mandatory at both bus endpoints, using 4 units of IC660BLM506 (150-ohm) resistors and 4 units of IC660BLM508 (75-ohm) resistors.

In terms of functional expansion, the IC697BEM731 supports global data exchange between CPUs when configured via Windows-based software. It is also compatible with the IC697 PLC alarm system, enabling the reporting of time-stamped faults in the processor’s data table. A rear-panel HHM port provides direct access for hand-held monitoring devices, while a dedicated connector supports IC66 Bus connections. Configuration can be completed via either Windows-based or MS-DOS configurator tools, with the Windows tool defaulting to a 153.5 Kbaud baud rate and a serial bus address of 31 (alternate baud rates and addresses are configurable via the same tools). The module incorporates built-in self-diagnostic capabilities that activate upon installation, and it features LED indicators that deliver real-time visual feedback on operational status and communication link health.
