Stepper Motor Control Information
Stepper motors have been used for many years and were originally actuated by mechanical switches. Modern stepper motors are controlled electronically, typically through computer control that pulses each of the four windings in proper sequence. Since computers cannot directly power motors, transistors must be added to each winding.
Using a Stepper Motor Controller Chip
The easiest method for providing proper actuation pulses without direct computer control is using custom stepper motor chips like the Allegro Microsystems series. These chips are designed specifically for common unipolar stepper motors and provide four-step actuation sequences.

The schematic shows basic hookup connections for driving a stepper motor from a computer or electronic interface. The phasing sequence is provided by software through a port following a four-bit binary sequence: 1010, 0110, 0101, 1001 (reverse the sequence to reverse motor direction).
Stepper motor translator chips are moderately priced ($5-$10) and can drive heavier duty motors (over 1A per phase) by adding power transistors to the chip outputs. The Direction pin controls motor rotation - pulling it high or low reverses the rotation direction.
